Customer Reviews
Overall I am very happy with this labeler. The display is not as easy to view as I would like, but it does the job. The case that comes with this labeler, is very nice, and is similar in design to what you would find with various power tools, it is hard molded plastic. It holds the Labeler, the AC Adapter, the Instruction Manual, and spare Label Cartidges. The printout on the Labels are very clean and clear. This labeler also comes with a 19mm Black on White Starter Cartridge. Out of the box, you could insert the label Cartridge, Plug in the AC Adapter, turn it on, and start making labels However I HIGHLY recommend reading the Manual. I'm glad I did, otherwise I might have damaged the Label Maker..
3 items that I think should have a least a warning label somewhere on the labeler, are the following.
Striped tape indicates the end of the tape cassette. If this appears during
printing, press the Power key to turn the P-touch labeler off.
Attempting to print with an empty tape cassette may damage the
machine.
Feed function
The Feed function feeds 0.98" (25mm) of blank tape.
Be sure to feed tape to remove any slack in the tape and ink ribbon after inserting the tape
cassette.
Do not pull the label coming out of the tape exit slot. Doing so will cause the ink ribbon
to be discharged with the tape.
Do not block the tape exit slot during printing or when feeding tape. Doing so will cause the
tape to jam.
DO NOT try to print labels using an empty tape cassette or without a tape cassette set in
the P-touch labeler. Doing so will damage the print head.
The above text is directly from the online Manual.
For a home user, that reads the Instruction Manual, the warnings above could easily be adheared to, but for someone who decides not to read the Manual, or say in an office setting, most likely would run into issues rather quickly!
Another item worth mentioning, is that this Label Maker, is not very efficient, and some of the Label gets wasted, every time you make a label. There is a setting to help reduce this waste, but there is still Label waste. To compare to a Hand Held Dymo Labeler I own, there is absolutely no waste involved. The cost can add up over time. I've also purchased Label Cartridges that have the "Extra Strength Adhesive". The instructions with this Cartridge recommends you use a pair of scissors to cut this Label, because if you use the built in cutter, it will gum up the blade. Not a problem here, just more Label waste. :) The other thing that is mentioned when using the "Extra Strength Adhesive" labels, is to "Avoid Conact with Skin". I've really tried to do this with my big fingers using the 9mm Tapes, but I didn't have any luck. No big deal, if you do touch it, it just feels a little more tacky, then the usual stuff. The only reason I mention it, is if you have kids around doing crafts with it. Otherwise all things considered, I like it, and it has more functions then i would ever use, and I hope to have it for many years to come.
This is the label maker to get if you don't want to have to change batteries all the time. This label maker comes with a plug-in power adapter so you don't use up your batteries every time you use it. It still works on batteries too if you don't want to have to plug it in or if power is not readily available. I've only ever used it with the power adapter so cannot comment on battery life.
The carry case is great for storing the label maker, power adapter and several tape cassettes. It is a bit bulky though, it is about the size of a large laptop and much thicker.
This label maker has a few more bells and whistles in terms of font size, symbols and the like and can take a wider range of tape widths compared to some of the smaller, less expensive label makers.
I've used 4 or 5 different models of Brother Lablers over the last 15 or so years and the menus are all pretty similar. I don't use them often enough to memorize the menus, but for most things I'm able to figure out what I want to do without using the manual. For the most common things (font type, size and style) the menus are intuitive and my wife and kids can figure them out without trouble. The only thing I have to look up is if I want a particular symbol.
Pros:
dual power source (batteries or plug-in)
power adapter included
wide range of tape widths
more fonts, symbols, etc than smaller labelers
case stores all parts and supplies
Cons:
Case is bulky
labeler is larger than others - best for desk use
5 Stars - I'd recommend it to anyone unless they needed a labeler that can fit in your pocket.
