I buy a lot of electronics, and I'm always getting cables and adapters mixed up. I wanted to get a cheap electronic labeller I could use to get me out of this mess. This little puppy fit the bill perfectly.
    Pro:
+ Inexpensive given the features: different size / color tape cartridges, different size types, etc.
+ cartridges are easy to pop in and out, and a little window on back lets you see what size / color cartridge is in, and how much tape is left
+ Input preview window is a big step up from using a non-digital labeller
+ Easy to use as a budget labeller. I didn't even read the manual, and am able to use it just fine.
+ Label tape has stayed stuck to everything I put it on: AC adapters, around cables, etc.
+ Built-in tape cutter works just fine (though you'll probably want to trim)
    Con:
    - Uses too much extra tape either side of what you print
    - Tape is hard to remove backing from, I drive myself crazy trying!
    - A bit big and bulky
Really the biggest complaint is the extra tape used. I print relatively short labels, e.g. 'cybershot' and wind up with an extra inch of tape on either side I have to trim down. Once it's trimmed, it takes a LOT of work to get the backing off the tape. Not so much once you get started, but getting that initial gap between the tape and the backing, D'OH!
I've had this for about a year so far, printed perhaps 50 labels, batteries are still just fine. It's got a 9 volt DC slot, so I guess you could just power it directly or use rechargeables if you care.
I'd buy it again. I did a lot of looking around, this was one of the cheaper digital labellers, and I'm happy with the quality.

    Customer Reviews

I am a very organized person, and I wanted to streamline the look of my filing systems. Martha Stewart recommended the Brother P Touch on her shows many times, and I figured I'd give it a try.
Here are some thoughts and comments:
Sucks up battery life like crazy. I attempted to use NEW yet out-of-the-package AAA batteries (expiration 2009) and the machine would stop printing and power off. You MUST use extremely new/fresh batteries, but really, I suggest that you take this opportunity to buy yourself a battery recharger with several rechargeable batteries if you are going to use this product. I also think an upgrade to this product would be the ability to operate it two ways : with batteries AND electric power source.
There is a little piece of paper included somewhere in the packet that is very easy to miss, but is crucial to its operation. It is of a diagram which shows you that you must first REMOVE A PIECE OF THIN FOAM from the machine before installing the tape. This is NOT in the instruction booklet!
$10+ for replacement cartridges seems expensive, seeing as how they do not last very long. Think ahead and buy your cartridges online at a discount so that you do not find yourself at the office supply store mid-project, paying way too much for retail.
Colored tape makes it easy for you to color code your files. Though I prefer the plain black/white, you can use different color tapes for specific projects. For instance, financial files could be GREEN. There are several colors available but I did not find them visually pleasing, so I'm sticking with the black on white.
In addition to color coding, there are functions which allow you to BOLD, ITALICIZE, and UNDERLINE, as well as choose which border you'd like to use. One of the more fun borders is CANDY, which looks like a candy wrapper. It's fun and feminine, and I use that one for my designer files. But there are more plain borders, as well as a masculine WOOD look. Others options are font size ; normal, 1/2 and X2 and width, which you can use to adjust for more characters. For example, a short word such as BANK is short enough to fit X2 on a file folder, whereas FINANCIAL STATEMENTS 2007 could be in regular size font and on 2 lines, to fit the folders. It's quite user friendly that way.
The keyboard is obviously small, and therefore so are the keys. If you have big fingers, or long nails, use the eraser-side of a pencil on the keyboard.
As with any new gadget, it will take some time to figure out how to use the product, but the instructions are easy to understand, overall.
Unfortunately, I paid full retail for this, but the price at Amazon is HALF of what I paid at the office supply store. I'm going to buy one from Amazon, with tapes, for my sister for her birthday. I think it makes a great gift, everyone will love this item. (And perhaps include the aforementioned batteries/charger as well!)
I have given the item 3 stars instead of 4 because Brother is soaking its customers with expensive replacement tapes. Doesn't seem very ethical to me. Also, new models are introduced to the market all the time, so while you may think you will use this for several years, it is more likely that newer, better models will become attractive with more experience and use. In this sense, the item is not cost-effective, especially since repair/replacement is probably more expensive than just buying a new one.

I just picked this label printer up (at Office Depot, since it was on special at nearly half the current amazon price) and am very pleased with the purchase.
The device is very light weight, using just 4 AAA batteries (not included).
I felt that the standard QWERTY keyboard was a plus over the ABC keyboards that the Dymo label printers use (this is personal preference -- some people may be more comfortable with the latter).
The device has several built in preset label sizes, to accomodate the spines of VHS/DVD, MiniDV, File tabs and Dividers (though this does 'waste' the label tape, causing the user to have to restock sooner).
The device comes with a single spool of Black on White -- the instructions indicate 26.2", though the product description here on Amazon states this means 26' of tape.
There is just 1 font, however labels can be printer either horizontally (the default for most people) or vertically. IN addition, you can 'stretch' it to 2x width or 1/2x width. A handful of symbols help you visually identify information (such as a small phone to indicate a phone number, or envelope to indicate email address).
Overall, the value is great, especially if you can get it for a low price!

    Customer Reviews

I've owned a Brother PC- only labeler for a few years now, but I ended up not using it much after the initial play period. The problem is, if you have to sit down and fire up your PC and the software (no matter how intuitive and sexy), it's just easier to use a pen, or nothing at all for that matter! After I read that David Allen, the author of Getting Things Done, concurred, I looked again for a more "ready when you are" tool. I highly recommend that you check out Brother's website; they have a nifty comparison feature that you can customize per model and feature and produce a PDF at the end - great for your final decision process. For me, size and an auto cutter were the main features I was looking for, and that eventually lead me to this device, the little-reviewed 18R.
This particular unit is 2-3 times smaller in volume than all its brothers (non-intended pun here), thanks to its rechargeable battery. I was resisting this rechargeable business at first, because it implies frequent use (like a cell phone or laptop), but I warmed up to it. The price difference isn't that great (~$20 compared to a slightly lesser unit, the price of 8 good rechargeable AAs actually), plus it turned out that the little beast can go up to six months of occasional use without recharging, which is very impressive in my book. The NiMh cell is custom and labeled "Brother 18R"; hopefully there will be replacements in a couple of years when it finally gives out. I especially like the fact that this unit stores extremely well in addition to it being small: unlike the desktop models which sit flat on your desk and awkwardly occupy a lot of space no matter where you place them, this one actually goes into your library like a book, or upright into a corner of your desk drawer or file folder.
The auto cutter lives up to its name, so much better than manual. It cuts off the tape lead so you don't have to keep scissors around (you may find that funny, but re-cutting labels was standard procedure with my other labeler!). My favorite is the "chain mode". Here, you essentially delay your latest print in favor of a more efficient use of tape material. For example, if you enter "January", "February" and "March" and hit Print every time, the "March" label remains in the unit until you print something else or change your mind and hit the "scissors" button. This should address most people's issues with the wasted tape; it's as good as it gets with this system.
The device is very easy to use: while you type your text, it tells you how long your label is going to be. If you select borders, etc. the graphical display shows you the styles, and if you desire you can hit the preview button to get a WYSIWYG representation before printing. There are also a few "layouts" available, for example fixed-length (for your file folders), or two-line printing with different font sizes on each line (I find these particularly useful to label my Nalgene bottles with the content plus my name underneath). Unfortunately, the chain print mode (see above) doesn't work with those handy layouts; it always cuts off about 1/2" of empty tape. But I can live with it.
My minor gripe with this device is the low-contrast, non-backlit display (hey, since I'm running on rechargeables, I could justify the energy needs of a backlight). Also, the latch that closes the cassette department doesn't seem solid to me: a tiny plastic thing, similar to the one that broke on my other labeler. While I'm whining, I'd also like 360 dpi resolution for that really industrial look, but those printers are currently much more expensive (or PC- only, which to me is now useless).
Still, this is the most useful, feature- rich, and compact labeler that I've ever used, so 4 stars are deserved. Hope it helped in your quest to label those sock drawers :)

This system fits nicely in the hands. It holds a charge a long time. I owned another brother product. The batteries did not last long. I purchased the AC adapter which was about the same price as the Labeler. Then I was limited by the cord
This cord-free version with long battery life is great. And means that I can take the labeler to whereever the project is. It automatically cuts so there is an even border on each side of the label. I purchased this because it has the ability to connect to a PC via USB port, though I have not used that feature yet.
It seemed like I went through the tape that came with the system quickly. It may have been shorter (like a sample) I am on my second cartridge and it seems to be lasting a long time.
My only comment is that I think the borders on each side are long--forcing you to use more tape than necessary. But this seems to be how they all work, so I still rate it 5 stars.
